I assume you're using 10-40 oil. Are you using automotive oil or motorcycle oil? If you're using automotive oil, switch to 'cycle oil. Motorcycle oil has more anti-foaming agents which are needed in our engines. If you haven't changed your oil filter lately, change it and your oil immediatly. I would also recommend using 15-40 (if you can find it) or 20-50 oil, especially if the weather is hot in your area.
Another idea is to try an oil additive like STP or DuraLube. Stay away from any additive with teflon, all it does is add teflon particles that can plug your filter and build up in your crankcase. I've used DuraLube in bikes and had engine noise quiet down and performance improve.
If you're using low octane gas, switch to the highest octane you can find. Stay away from gasohol, your engine was not designed to run on it.
If nothing helps, consult your friendly neighborhood mechanic or wait until the Clymer arrives. Good Luck.
